Crossing into France by road is a different kind of trip from a day out on the Costa Brava. The distances are longer, the border is a factor, and the stops matter. I use this page for the two destinations people ask about most: Perpignan on the French side of the Pyrenees, and the walled city of Carcassonne further inland. Other places in the south of France can be quoted on request.
If you are looking for shorter trips, see private tours with a chauffeur.
Barcelona to Carcassonne and Perpignan: distance and time
- Perpignan. 192 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 2 h 15 min without traffic. Open the route on Google Maps.
- Carcassonne. 303 km, about 3 h 20 min without traffic. Open the route on Google Maps.
Real journey times depend on the day. Summer weekends, holiday departures and any queues at the border add time, so I plan the departure with some margin. For general information on the region, see Catalonia tourism.
Price: quoted on request
For Perpignan and Carcassonne there is no day-trip estimate and no fixed table price. These are one-way or return transfers, and I quote them on request. The price depends on the vehicle, the date, the pick-up and drop-off points and whether the driver waits or returns. Prices are in euros and include VAT.
The vehicles I offer are:
| Vehicle | Passengers |
|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 |
| Mercedes S-Class (hourly only) | up to 3 |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 |
| Minibus | up to 33 |
| Coach | up to 60 |
Send the date, the number of passengers and the luggage through the form below. I reply by e-mail or WhatsApp with a quote. The general rates are on the prices page.
Which vehicle for a trip to France
- E-Class. Up to 3 passengers. For a couple or a business traveller.
- V-Class. Up to 7 passengers, with room for luggage. See Mercedes V-Class with driver.
- Sprinter. Up to 16 passengers. For a family reunion or a group of friends. See Sprinter van with driver.
- Minibus or coach. Up to 33 or 60 passengers, for clubs, associations and tour groups. See coach hire.
Planning a cross-border trip
Travel documents are the passenger’s responsibility, so check the entry rules for your nationality before you travel. Tell me whether anyone in the party needs extra time at the border, and I allow for it. Plan stops: for Carcassonne, a break halfway is sensible.
If your trip starts at the airport, send the flight arrival and I plan the pick-up. Official information is on the Barcelona airport site.
Private transfer or public transport
Search results for this route include coach marketplaces, buses and train connections. I do not publish public fares or times, since they change; check the operators. A private transfer differs in practical ways:
- Door to door. The driver collects you at your address and drops you at your destination.
- Your timetable. No changes, no waiting for a connection.
- Luggage. Cases stay in the vehicle.
- One vehicle for the party. Everyone travels together.
Carcassonne, Perpignan and beyond
The two places on this page are the ones people search for most, but they are not the only options.
- Perpignan. The nearest large French city. At 192 km it is a shorter trip, and it works as a one-way transfer for guests who continue by train or onward by road.
- Carcassonne. A longer drive, with the medieval walled city as the draw. Many guests stay a night or two there.
- Other destinations. Narbonne, Montpellier, Toulouse and the Mediterranean coast are possible. Tell me where you want to go, and I check the distance and quote it on request.
Because these are cross-border trips, I do not offer a fixed table price. The quote depends on the destination, the date and the plan.
One-way, return or a longer stay
There are three ways to book a trip into France.
- One-way transfer. The driver takes you to your destination and returns without you.
- Return with a wait. The driver stays and brings you back on an agreed day. On a trip of this length I plan the driver’s rest time with you before I quote.
- Several days. If you want the vehicle during a stay in France, for example a tour of the region, it is a multi-day booking quoted on request.
Tell me which you want and the dates. I send a written quote by e-mail or WhatsApp, and I only give a figure once I know the plan.
Choosing the vehicle
Comfort matters more on a three-hour drive than on a short one. An E-Class suits a couple, a V-Class a family or a small group with luggage, a Sprinter a group of friends, and a minibus or coach a club or association. If you land at Barcelona and continue to France, send the flight details and the number of bags and I check that the vehicle has room. Official airport information is on the Barcelona airport site; for the transfer itself see Barcelona airport chauffeur.
Reaching the Pyrenees side
Some guests want Perpignan as a base for the Pyrenees and the coast beyond the border. If you plan a loop through Andorra and into France, tell me, and I price the route as one booking. The page on Barcelona to Andorra covers the mountain end.
