Girona is the main city of northern Catalonia, with a medieval old town, a river lined with coloured houses and a cathedral at the top of a long stair. It is also the base for the Costa Brava and the Dalí museum in Figueres. If you are searching for a barcelona to girona transfer, you probably want a fixed price, a clear idea of the journey time and a choice of vehicle. This page has all three.
For a wider choice of day trips from the city, see the private tours with a chauffeur page.
Barcelona to Girona: distance and time
From Plaça de Catalunya in central Barcelona to the centre of Girona it is 101 km, about 1 h 15 min without traffic. The route heads north-east on the motorway. You can see it on Google Maps. Getting out of Barcelona at the morning and evening peaks is the slowest part, so for a train or a flight I add margin.
Fixed price: Barcelona to Girona
These are the prices from my table for a one-way transfer, in euros, VAT included:
| Vehicle | Passengers | Price |
|---|---|---|
| E-Class | up to 3 | €210 |
| V-Class | up to 7 | €210 |
| Sprinter | up to 16 | €610 |
| Minibus | up to 33 | €750 |
| Coach | up to 60 | €750 |
The price is for the vehicle, not per person. The S-Class is booked by the hour only. A return, a different pick-up point or an extra stop is quoted on request. The full table is on the prices page.
Day trip to Girona with the driver waiting
If you want to see Girona and come back the same day, hire by the hour suits better than two one-way transfers. The estimate assumes 1 h 15 min each way and 4 hours in the city, rounded up to the half hour. That gives 6.5 hours of hire, above the 6-hour minimum per day:
| Vehicle | 6.5 hours of hire |
|---|---|
| E-Class (up to 3) | €510 |
| S-Class (up to 3) | €805 |
| V-Class (up to 7) | €510 |
| Sprinter (up to 16) | €655 |
| Minibus (up to 33) | €735 |
| Coach (up to 60) | €735 |
More time in Girona costs extra hours at the hourly rate. How that works is explained on the chauffeur by the hour page.
Barcelona to Girona: private transfer, bus or train
The related searches for this route name buses, trains, tickets and timetables. I do not publish other operators’ fares or schedules, because they change. For trains, check Renfe, and for buses check the carrier’s own site. What a private driver adds:
- Door to door. Pick-up at your hotel or home in Barcelona, drop-off at an address in Girona.
- Luggage and groups. Everyone and everything travel in one vehicle.
- Your timing. The departure is set by you, not by a timetable.
- Onward travel. The same car can continue to the airport, the coast or a hotel outside the city.
Girona airport, the Costa Brava and Figueres
Girona is a junction as much as a destination. Three onward trips come up most:
- Girona airport. 96 km from central Barcelona, quoted on request. See Barcelona to Girona airport.
- The Costa Brava. Resorts such as Lloret de Mar are a short drive from Girona. See Barcelona to the Costa Brava.
- Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The museum publishes its opening information on the official museum site, and I cover the trip on Barcelona to Figueres.
For general visitor information on the city and the region, use the official Catalonia tourism site.
Girona on the way: what people do there
Most passengers on this route fall into three groups. Day visitors spend a few hours in the old town, walking the walls, the cathedral steps and the river front, and head back to Barcelona in the evening. Travellers with onward plans use Girona as a stop on the way to the coast or the Pyrenees. And people with an early flight from Girona airport travel the night before or very early in the morning. The driver can fit any of these. For planning the day in the city, the Catalan government’s tourism portal is the official starting point, and I can suggest a sensible order if you tell me your interests.
Timing and traffic
The 1 h 15 min is the free-flow time. Leaving Barcelona on a weekday morning or on a Friday afternoon takes longer, and so does returning on a Sunday evening. I plan the departure around your appointments, not around the best case. If you must be somewhere at a fixed time, such as a train or a booked entry, tell me and I work backwards from it.
Transfer, hourly hire or a longer route
Three options cover almost every request on this route:
- One-way transfer. Barcelona to Girona at the fixed price in the table above. Best when you are staying in Girona or moving on.
- Return with the driver waiting. Priced by the hour, as in the day-trip table. Best for a day in the city.
- A route with several stops. For example Girona, then the coast, then back. Hire by the hour fits better, and anything beyond the table is quoted on request.
Choosing the vehicle
For a couple or a business traveller, the E-Class is enough. For a family with luggage or up to 7 people, the V-Class is the same price. A group of up to 16 takes the Sprinter, and larger groups take the minibus or coach.
Luggage, groups and stops on the way
Tell me the number of passengers and bags in the request. A couple with two cases is comfortable in the E-Class, while a family of five with luggage needs the V-Class. If you want a short stop on the way, for example a coffee or a viewpoint, mention it and I fit it into the plan. Stops that add a lot of time are priced as hire by the hour.
