A chauffeur by the hour is the most flexible way to use a car in Barcelona. You decide the stops, the order and the pace, and the driver stays with you. It suits days with meetings, shopping, sightseeing or a mix of everything.
How hourly chauffeur hire works
You book a vehicle with a driver for a number of hours. The clock starts at the agreed pick-up time and runs until you are dropped off. The rules are short:
- The minimum is 6 hours per day, with no maximum.
- Extra hours are charged at the hourly rate for the vehicle.
- Prices are in euros and include VAT.
- The S-Class is booked by the hour only.
- Destinations outside the city, several days and special dates are quoted on request.
Chauffeur by the hour Barcelona: prices
| Vehicle | Passengers | 6 hours | 8 hours | Each extra hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 | €470 | €630 | €80 |
| Mercedes S-Class | up to 3 | €745 | €990 | €125 |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | €470 | €630 | €80 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | €610 | €785 | €90 |
| Minibus | up to 33 | €685 | €900 | €110 |
| Coach | up to 60 | €685 | €900 | €110 |
The V-Class has the same price as the E-Class, so a group of four or a party with many bags should take it. The Mercedes V-Class page shows how it works for families and teams.
Driver for a day in Barcelona
A driver for a day is the common request. Eight hours is a full working day: €630 in the E-Class or V-Class, €990 in the S-Class. Some examples of how people use it:
- Business day. Meetings across the city, lunch in between, and the airport at the end. See business chauffeur.
- Sightseeing day. Sagrada Família, Park Güell and the old town without waiting for transport. Check opening hours and tickets on the Sagrada Família and Visit Barcelona sites. See also private tours with a chauffeur.
- Shopping day. Between the shopping streets, the hotel and a late lunch, with the vehicle waiting for the bags.
- Event day. A wedding or a gala with several pick-ups. See weddings.
Day trips by the hour
Outside the city, hourly hire is a good way to see more without planning each leg. The hours include the drive to the destination, the time you spend there and the drive back. Popular days:
- Montserrat, with the monastery and the mountain. Visit information is on the Montserrat site.
- Sitges, for the coast.
- Girona and the Costa Brava.
- A Penedès wine day.
I count the hours with you before the trip, so you know roughly what the day will cost. If it runs long, extra hours are charged at the hourly rate. Nothing else is added.
Choosing the hours
Six hours suits a half-day plan with a long lunch or two meetings. Eight hours covers a working day, or a day trip with a visit. For a plan longer than that, add hours at the hourly rate. The question I ask is where you will be at the end of the day. If you finish at the airport or the port, I count the drive to it.
Hourly hire or a fixed transfer
For a single journey with a fixed price, the transfer is cheaper. The airport transfer between El Prat and Barcelona is €80 in the E-Class or V-Class, against €470 for the 6-hour minimum. Use hourly hire when you want the driver to wait and to take you to several places.
Example days and how the hours add up
Hours are easier to judge with examples. These are not extra price rows, only ways to think about the booking.
A business day in the city. Pick-up at the hotel at 08:30, two meetings, a lunch, a third meeting and a drop-off at the airport in the late afternoon. That is close to 8 hours, so the 8-hour price applies, and a long final meeting adds hours at the hourly rate.
A half-day for a visit. Pick-up at 10:00, the Sagrada Família, a walk and a lunch, and a drop-off at the hotel at 16:00. That is the 6-hour minimum.
A day trip outside the city. The drive each way counts. A visit to Montserrat or Sitges needs the travel time plus the time you spend there, which usually lands between 6 and 9 hours. I work out the figure with you and tell you before you confirm.
An evening. A dinner, a show and the way home can be booked as 6 hours, which is the minimum, even if you use less. For this reason, many guests combine an evening with a daytime errand.
Hourly chauffeur or private driver
Two names describe similar services. A chauffeur by the hour is hired for a block of time. A private driver is more often a fixed route. My page on private driver Barcelona covers the fixed side. If you are not sure which fits your trip, describe the plan in the form and I tell you which is cheaper.
What is not included
Parking, tolls and the cost of entry to sites are your own spending unless I tell you otherwise when I quote. The driver does not act as a guide in the venues. For information on city transport and sights, TMB and Visit Barcelona are the official sources.
