Montserrat is the mountain 60 km north-west of Barcelona with the Benedictine monastery on its slopes. A private tour with a chauffeur is the simplest way to see it: pick-up at your hotel, a drive of about an hour, and a driver who waits while you visit. This page gives you the distance, the prices and how to plan the day.
Barcelona to Montserrat: distance and time
From Plaça de Catalunya in central Barcelona to the Montserrat Monastery the road is 60 km, about 1 h without traffic. That is the free-flow figure; on a busy Friday afternoon or a summer weekend, allow more.
You can check the route on Google Maps. For visiting information, the official site is Montserrat Visita; opening times, access options and any restrictions are published there, and I recommend checking it before you set the day.
Montserrat private tour prices
Prices are in euros and include VAT.
One-way or return transfer, Barcelona to Montserrat:
| Vehicle | Passengers | Price |
|---|---|---|
| E-Class | up to 3 | €135 |
| V-Class | up to 7 | €135 |
| Sprinter | up to 16 | €410 |
| Minibus | up to 33 | €495 |
| Coach | up to 60 | €495 |
A full day with the driver at your disposal. The round trip is about 1 h each way and I allow 3 h on site, which falls inside the 6-hour daily minimum:
- E-Class (up to 3): 6 hours = €470
- S-Class (up to 3): 6 hours = €745
- V-Class (up to 7): 6 hours = €470
- Sprinter (up to 16): 6 hours = €610
- Minibus (up to 33): 6 hours = €685
- Coach (up to 60): 6 hours = €685
If you stay longer than planned, extra hours are charged at the hourly rate: €80 in the E-Class or V-Class, €125 in the S-Class, €90 in the Sprinter and €110 in the minibus or coach. The whole rate card is on the prices page.
Which option to choose
A transfer is the better option if you want to be dropped off and picked up at fixed times, or if you plan to return another way. The full-day option is better if you want the driver to stay with you, wait while you visit and take you back when you are ready, with no clock to watch.
For most visitors I recommend the full day, because Montserrat is not a place to hurry. The time you spend on site depends on what you want to do: the basilica, the viewpoints, a walk on the trails or lunch.
Plan your Montserrat day
A simple outline that works for many groups:
- Morning pick-up at your hotel in Barcelona.
- Drive to Montserrat, about an hour without traffic.
- Time on site for the monastery, the viewpoints and a meal.
- Return to Barcelona, or on to a second stop.
Because the driver stays with the car, you can combine Montserrat with something else on the way back. A common pairing is a vineyard visit in the Penedès; read about the Penedès wine tour. If you want to see the city and the mountain on separate days, the private tours with a chauffeur page lists other ideas.
Montserrat distance and ways to get there
People search for how far Montserrat is from Barcelona and how to get there from the city. The distance is 60 km, about an hour by car. There are public options too, such as the train, and the official Montserrat site lists the current ways to reach the monastery. I do not copy timetables here because they change; the official page is the right source.
The difference with a private car is control. You leave when you want, you are collected at your hotel, and you are not tied to a return departure. For many visitors that matters more on a half-day visit, because the time on site is the part you cannot get back.
Half day or full day
A half-day Montserrat visit is possible, but the hourly minimum is 6 hours per day. For a short plan, a transfer at €135 in the E-Class or V-Class may be a better fit: the driver takes you there and returns to collect you at an agreed time. For a relaxed visit with a meal, the full 6-hour day is simpler, because the driver stays with the car and you are not watching the clock.
Combining Montserrat with other stops
Ideas that work on the same day, with extra hours charged at the hourly rate:
- A vineyard in the Penedès, on the way back toward Barcelona.
- A return via the coast, if you want to see Sitges in the evening. See the Sitges chauffeur page.
- A late lunch in a village near the mountain, before heading back.
Tell me what you would like to include, and I check how many hours it adds and what the total is.
Tips for the day
- Check the official Montserrat Visita page for the sections you want to visit and for any seasonal changes before you fix your timing.
- Wear shoes you can walk in. The site is on a mountainside, and the paths are uneven in places.
- Bring a light jacket: the weather at altitude can differ from Barcelona.
- If you want to walk one of the trails, tell me, so the plan has the right number of hours.
Montserrat with a group
The Mercedes V-Class takes up to 7 passengers, so a family or a small group can travel in one car; see the Mercedes V-Class with a driver page. For larger groups the Sprinter takes 16, and the minibus and coach take 33 and 60. Tell me the number of people and I confirm the right vehicle.
