Tossa de Mar is a walled medieval town on the Costa Brava with a main beach, an old quarter on the headland and coves either side. It is close enough to Barcelona for a day out and far enough that the coast road matters. A private driver takes the planning out: one pick-up, one vehicle, and a car waiting when you want to head back.
This page covers the Barcelona to Tossa de Mar transfer from the city centre. For the whole coast, see Barcelona to the Costa Brava.
Barcelona to Tossa de Mar: distance and time
The drive from Plaça de Catalunya to Tossa de Mar is 86 km, about 1 h 15 min without traffic. In July and August, and on sunny weekends in spring and autumn, expect the last stretch into town to be slower. Leaving earlier than you think you need to is the easiest fix.
You can open the route on Google Maps. For general visitor information about the Catalan coast, the official Catalonia tourism site is a good starting point.
Price: a day trip with a driver at your disposal
The reliable way to price Tossa de Mar is as a day trip. The driver collects you in Barcelona, drives you down, stays in town while you walk the old quarter or sit on the beach, and brings you back. The estimate below assumes the 1 h 15 min drive each way plus 4 hours in Tossa, rounded up to the half hour. That gives 6.5 hours of hire, above the 6-hour daily minimum.
| Vehicle | Passengers | 6.5 hours of hire |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 | €510 |
| Mercedes S-Class | up to 3 | €805 |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | €510 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | €655 |
| Minibus | up to 33 | €735 |
| Coach | up to 60 | €735 |
Prices are in euros and include VAT. If you stay longer, each extra hour is charged at the hourly rate: €80 in the E-Class or V-Class, €125 in the S-Class, €90 in the Sprinter and €110 in the minibus or coach. The estimate is hours of disposal multiplied by the table, not a fixed transfer fee. The full table is on the prices page.
One way or a return?
Some guests want a simple one-way run, for example to a villa or a hotel in Tossa where they will stay. That is not the day-trip figure above. A one-way transfer from Barcelona to Tossa de Mar, and a transfer from the airport, are quoted on request. Tell me the pick-up point, the destination address and the number of passengers and bags, and I reply with the vehicle and price.
If you plan to see Tossa and then continue up the coast, say so in the form. Combining stops often works better as hourly hire than as separate transfers. The Lloret de Mar transfer page covers the neighbouring resort, and the Girona transfer page is useful if you want to add the city.
Train, bus or private driver?
Search results for this route are full of train timetables, bus tickets and airport shuttles. I do not publish public fares or times, because they change. Tossa de Mar has no railway station, so a train journey needs a change to a bus. The operators and Renfe are the right place to check the current options.
What a private driver changes:
- Door to door. Pick-up at your hotel or address in Barcelona, drop-off where you are staying or at the old town.
- Your timetable. You choose when to leave and when to return.
- Luggage. Beach bags, a picnic or suitcases travel in the vehicle with you.
- One vehicle for the group. Everyone arrives together, which helps families and mixed-age parties.
From Barcelona airport to Tossa de Mar
Many people searching for a Barcelona airport to Tossa de Mar transfer land at El Prat and go straight to the coast. The airport is on the other side of the city from the centre, so the route and the price are different from the city-centre figures above. I quote it on request, with the flight arrival time in your message. Official airport information is on the Aena Barcelona-El Prat page. See also the general airport transfer page for the airport service.
Choosing the vehicle
- E-Class, up to 3 passengers. For a couple or a small family with day bags.
- V-Class, up to 7 passengers. Same day-trip price as the E-Class and the better choice once you pass three people or bring beach gear.
- S-Class, up to 3 passengers. Booked by the hour only. See the S-Class chauffeur page.
- Sprinter, minibus or coach. For a larger family, a wedding party or a company outing. Details are on Sprinter with driver and coach hire.
Planning your time in Tossa
Four hours is a comfortable stay for most visitors. It is enough to walk up through the walled old town, look over the sea from the headland, have lunch and spend an hour on the beach. If you want a swim, a long lunch and the old town, add an hour or two. The extra hours are charged at the hourly rate, so it is easy to cost.
Parking in Tossa is tight in summer, which is another reason to let the driver handle it. You are dropped close to where you want to go, and the car waits elsewhere until you call. Tell me if anyone in the group has limited mobility, because the old town is hilly and cobbled, and I can choose the drop-off with that in mind.
Best time to go
Spring and early autumn give you the town with fewer crowds and a coast road that is easier to drive. July and August are busy: the beach fills early, and the road in and out can be slow late in the afternoon. If you go in high summer, I suggest leaving Barcelona in the morning and heading back before the evening rush. Winter days are quiet, and some beach businesses close, so check what you want to see before you plan the day.
Adding a second stop
A common request is to pair Tossa with another place on the same coast. The coves and clifftop paths either side of Tossa are one option, and the Costa Brava hub page lists the others. A second stop adds driving time, so the hours of hire go up. Tell me the places you have in mind and I will tell you whether it fits in one day.
