A Barcelona wine tour private to the Penedès is easy to arrange: the wine country is closest to Barcelona, and it is easy to reach for a day. The sticking point for most visitors is not distance, it is the drinking: if you taste at several wineries, someone else should be driving. That is where a driver for the day fits. This page explains how I plan a Barcelona wine tour as a private day, what it costs, and what you arrange yourself.
Barcelona wine tour private: how the day works
You are not buying a fixed tour with a guide. You are hiring a car and driver for the day and choosing the plan. The driver collects you in Barcelona, takes you to your first winery, waits during the visit and tasting, and moves you on to the next stop or lunch. You decide when to leave.
The practical points:
- Wineries are booked directly. Most need a reservation for tastings. Book them first, then send me the times.
- I provide the vehicle and the driver. Visit fees and tastings are paid at the winery.
- The driver stays with the vehicle between stops, so you can leave bags in it.
Distance and time
Vilafranca del Penedès is 55 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 50 min without traffic. It is a convenient base for the region. Open the route on Google Maps. For general information about wine areas and visiting in Catalonia, see Catalonia tourism.
Price: a driver at your disposal for the day
The estimate below assumes 50 minutes each way plus 5 hours in the region, rounded up to the half hour. That gives 7 hours of hire, above the 6-hour daily minimum.
| Vehicle | Passengers | 7 hours of hire |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 | €550 |
| Mercedes S-Class | up to 3 | €870 |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | €550 |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | €695 |
| Minibus | up to 33 | €790 |
| Coach | up to 60 | €790 |
Prices are in euros and include VAT. Each extra hour is charged at the hourly rate: €80 in the E-Class or V-Class, €125 in the S-Class, €90 in the Sprinter and €110 in the minibus or coach. The estimate is hours of disposal multiplied by the table, not a fixed tour price. The full table is on the prices page.
Sample plans for a day in the Penedès
These are outlines, not fixed itineraries. Adjust them to your wineries.
A relaxed day for a couple
Leave Barcelona mid-morning, taste at one winery, lunch in the region, then a second visit in the afternoon and a late-afternoon return. This sits comfortably inside the 7-hour estimate.
A group of friends
Seven or fewer fit in the V-Class at the same price as the E-Class. Agree the first winery time, then let the day follow. The driver handles parking and waiting.
A larger party
Eight to sixteen fit the Sprinter, and larger groups can ask about the minibus or coach. See Sprinter with driver and minibus with driver.
Cava, Priorat and Montserrat
People searching for a Barcelona wine tour also ask about cava tours, the Priorat and Montserrat with a winery. The Penedès is the cava region, and the day above works for it. The Priorat is a longer drive, so the plan, the hours and the price differ, and I quote it on request. Montserrat can be added to a winery day if you accept a longer day; see the Montserrat private tour page and the official Montserrat visitor site for visiting information.
Choosing the vehicle
- E-Class, up to 3. For a couple, with space for a few bottles.
- V-Class, up to 7. Better for friends or a family, and the same price as the E-Class.
- S-Class, up to 3. Booked by the hour only; see the S-Class chauffeur page.
- Sprinter, minibus or coach. For larger groups and corporate days.
What to settle before the day
A good wine day is planned in three steps. First, choose the wineries and book the tastings, because most wineries ask for a reservation. Second, send me the booking times, so I can plan the route and the order. Third, tell me how many people are coming, so I choose the vehicle.
Allow for travel between wineries. Distances in the region are short, but vineyard roads are slower than the motorway, and a tasting often lasts longer than planned. Two wineries and a long lunch make a relaxed day. Three wineries make a full one. If you want to taste at more than that, book more hours.
The driver and the day
Because the driver does not drink, the group can. The vehicle also stays with you the whole day: bottles you buy and bags you carry go in the boot and stay there. Say in the form if you plan to buy a few cases, as a V-Class or Sprinter has more space than an E-Class.
I do not run guided tours or give a commentary on the wine. If you want an expert at the tasting, the winery usually offers one, and a guided group tour is a different product. What I provide is the transport, flexible and private. For the wider range of days out, see chauffeur hire in Barcelona.
Seasons in the Penedès
The vineyards look different through the year. Autumn is harvest, when some wineries are busier and others offer special visits. Spring is green and quiet. Summer is hot, so many guests book a morning tasting and a long lunch. Opening hours and visit options vary by winery, so confirm them directly.
